Leur does not have one fixed grammatical identity. Before a noun it marks something possessed by several people; before a verb it can replace à eux or à elles and mean to them. The spelling stays the same, but position, agreement, and the verb’s construction make the choice predictable.

Quick answer

Use leur plus a singular noun for their and leurs plus a plural noun. Use invariable leur before a verb for to them: leur maison, leurs clés, je leur parle. The possessive agrees with the thing owned, never with the owners.

Quick answer

Possessive leur is a determiner and must introduce a noun. It says that the possessor is plural, while the following noun decides singular or plural spelling. Pronoun leur sits with a verb and represents plural people receiving an indirect action. Calling both forms leur is less helpful than identifying these jobs.

Meaning and usage

Several owners may share one house, so French writes leur maison. If they have multiple houses, it writes leurs maisons. The gender of the possessed item changes nothing: this form frère and the determiner or pronoun sœur. This differs from English intuition because the final s responds only to the number of the noun immediately possessed.

Decision table for the grammatical item and its neighbours

A quick scan to the right usually resolves the form. A noun points toward possession; a verb points toward an object pronoun. Then check whether that verb takes for a person. The imperative changes the pronoun’s position, but not its spelling.

Examples in context: possession and recipients

Notice that the owners’ gender never appears in the form. The examples also contrast an indirect-object verb with a direct-object verb, because English them alone does not tell you whether French requires this form or les.

Leur appartement donne sur la cour. → Their apartment overlooks the courtyard.

Leurs valises sont restées l’hôtel. → Their suitcases stayed at the hotel.

Je leur enverrai le programme demain. → I will send them the programme tomorrow.

Le professeur leur explique la consigne. → The teacher explains the instruction to them.

Téléphone-leur avant de partir. → Call them before leaving.

Nous les aidons déménager. → We are helping them move.
Aider takes a direct object, so French uses les.

Je pense souvent à eux. → I often think about them.
Penser keeps a stressed pronoun here, not leur.

Nuance and register note: neutral but structurally strict

the determiner or pronoun itself carries no special level of formality. The surrounding verb and sentence set the register. In informal speech, speakers may omit sounds elsewhere, yet the choice between direct les and indirect the grammatical item remains grammatically meaningful. In writing, leurs visibly marks plural possession even though final s is normally silent.

Common mistakes with agreement and objects

Writing leurs maison wrongly makes the s agree with several owners; write this form maison. Do not pluralise the pronoun before a verb: je leurs parle is never correct. Finally, do not choose the determiner or pronoun solely because English says to them. Some French verbs use a direct object-les écouter, les attendre, les aider-while others keep and permit the grammatical item.

Verb patterns decide between les and this form

Learn verbs with their complements. Parler à, répondre, téléphoner, and écrire take lui or the determiner or pronoun for people. écouter, regarder, attendre, and aider are direct and take le, la, or les. A reliable vocabulary note records répondre quelqu’un, not merely répondre = answer, because the preposition controls the pronoun.

Word order in statements and commands

Before a conjugated verb, the indirect pronoun normally precedes it: nous the grammatical item parlons. With an infinitive, it stands before the infinitive it belongs to: je vais this form parler. In an affirmative command it moves after the verb with a hyphen: parle-the determiner or pronoun. A negative command returns it to the front: ne the grammatical item parle pas.

Memory tip: look one word to the right

When you see this form, glance right. If a singular noun follows, read their; if a verb follows, test to them. If a plural noun follows, expect leurs with s. Then perform a second check on verbs: does French construct the action with - This two-step scan is faster and safer than translating the English pronoun first.

Practice: change number and syntax

Start from the determiner or pronoun vélo and make the possessed object plural: leurs vélos. Next transform je the grammatical item écris into a near-future sentence, je vais this form écrire, and an affirmative command, écris-the determiner or pronoun. Finally contrast je the grammatical item réponds with je les coute. State the verb pattern that justifies each pronoun rather than relying on sound.

The distinction worth retaining

Possessive this form or leurs belongs to a noun phrase; pronoun the determiner or pronoun belongs to a verb phrase. For possession, count the thing owned. For the verb form, verify an indirect human recipient and never add s. That small grammatical map handles gender, number, placement, and the frequent les-versus-the grammatical item error in one reusable routine.

Frequently asked

Questions about this note

Why is it leur fille even when several people have a daughter?

Possessive agreement follows the possessed noun. Fille is singular, so use this form.

Can the pronoun leur refer to women?

Yes. Indirect-object the determiner or pronoun means to them for any mixed, masculine, or feminine plural group.

Why do we say je les attends rather than je leur attends?

Attendre takes a direct object in French, so the plural object pronoun is les.

Where does leur go with an infinitive?

Place it before the infinitive it complements: je veux the grammatical item répondre.
